In a compactor room, clean the walls and the chute door frame before the floor drain area, and finish with the drain itself. Frequency is set by traffic, not by habit. A lobby floor in a 60 unit building may need damp mopping daily and machine scrubbing weekly. A back stairwell may need only a weekly pass. Writing the frequency down stops the argument about whether a surface was missed.
How should cleaning chemicals be stored and handled?
Chemical safety is the part of the job with the highest cost of error. Every product in the closet should have its safety data sheet on file, and the worker should be able to read the pictograms on the label: flame, corrosion, acute toxicity, and the exclamation mark for irritants. The H phrases on the sheet, such as H314 for severe skin burns, tell the reader what the product does to a person, not what it does to dirt.
Personal protective equipment follows the label, not the worker's preference. Nitrile gloves for most detergents and disinfectants, chemical splash goggles when pouring concentrate, and an apron or coverall when the product is corrosive. Gloves that have been used for a solvent should not be reused for a food contact surface.
Storage is where most building closets fail. Acids and bases go on separate shelves. Oxidizers stay away from anything flammable. The classic forbidden mix is bleach and ammonia, which releases chloramine gas, and bleach with an acid cleaner, which releases chlorine. A closet with a single unlabeled spray bottle is a hazard, because the next person cannot know what is inside. Label every secondary container with the product name and the dilution.
Which products fit which surface?
The pH of a detergent decides where it belongs. Neutral cleaners, near pH 7, are for finished floors, stone, and any surface where a film would show. Alkaline cleaners, pH 9 to 12, cut grease and are the right choice for kitchen hoods, oven interiors, and quarry tile in a commercial kitchen. Acid cleaners, pH 2 to 4, remove mineral scale and rust stains from toilets and tile, and they must never touch marble or a metal that reacts.
Disinfectants are a separate category from cleaners. A surface has to be cleaned first, because soil blocks contact. The label states a contact time, often one to ten minutes, and the surface must stay wet for that whole period. Spraying and wiping immediately is a clean, not a disinfection.
Dilution is measured, not guessed. A concentrated product poured by eye usually ends up too strong, which leaves residue and costs more, or too weak, which does not work. What records does a building need to keep?

They do, because set out rules shape the cleaning schedule. Bulk items follow a separate appointment. A mattress or a sofa left beside a bin without an appointment is a violation, and it also blocks the sweep. Building staff who keep the bulk log next to the cleaning log avoid that overlap.
What separates a clean building from a documented one?
The difference is repetition with proof. A clean building looks right on the day of a visit. A documented building looks right on any day, because the order of work, the chemicals, and the frequency are written down and checked.
