Signs of a private line problem include one building with repeated backups, or a single stack serving several apartments. When in doubt, document the pattern and call 311 for the public side. For the private side, a licensed plumber or drain service is the normal route.

Do not open a manhole or a sewer cleanout on your own. Those covers can be heavy, and the space below can hold gas. Keep children and pets away from open cleanouts and from standing water near electrical outlets.

How should a resident document a drain problem before calling?

A short written record saves time and money. Write the address, the date, and the time the problem started. List each affected fixture and what happens when it is used. Note any recent work in the building, such as a renovation, a new appliance, or a street repair. Photograph standing water, stains, and any visible cleanout.

If water is near electrical panels, outlets, or appliances, stop and treat it as a safety issue. Do not stand in water and touch electrical equipment. Shut off power to the affected area at the breaker if it is safe to reach, and call for help. For sewage backups, keep people away from the area and wear gloves if you must move items.

For a building with multiple units, the super or manager should keep a log. The log should note which units reported the issue, the time of each report, and any action taken. What does an inspection of a drain line involve?

The choice is a decision for the owner, based on the report and the budget.

How are grease, roots, and sludge managed over time?

Keep that summary with the building records. If the cause was grease, change the kitchen habit. If the cause was roots, plan a follow-up inspection. If the cause was a broken pipe, keep the camera footage and the repair invoice.
